Inmates of late Baba Amte’s ‘Anandwan’ to receive Covaxin

Hyderabad: Inmates of Anandwan, a shelter for leprosy patients in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, founded by Murlidhar Devidas Amte (late), are receiving Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin, as part of a vaccination progarmme that has started today.
Dr Krishna Ella, CMD, Bharat Biotech, an alumnus of Anand Niketan College of Agriculture of Warora (Maharashtra), learnt in one of his regular call with the Anandwan management that the inmates were affected by the pandemic, and he swiftly got into action and arranged to set aside 4,000 doses of Covaxin, and immediately dispatched 2,000 doses to them.
Appreciating the gesture to support the vaccination, “We are extremely happy,” said Kaustubh Amte, the grandson of Baba Amte. Dr Vikas Arnte, secretary of Maharogi Sewa Samiti, Dr Shrikant Amarshettiwar, principal of Anand Niketan College of Agriculture and Dr Vijay Pole, medical officer of Anandwan, extended their gratitude to Bharat Biotech and Dr Ella.
Noted social worker, Magsaysay awardee, and Padma Shri late Baba Amte, with a few leprosy patients and some savings founded Maharogi Sewa Samiti, “Anandwan” in the year 1949, located at Warora. Today it stands not only for leprosy patients but for every section of society.
Out of several projects started by Maharogi Sewa Samiti, Anand Niketan College of Agriculture is one important initiative.
