Is Sourdough Actually Healthier Than Regular Bread?

Sourdough bread, increasingly popular in cafes and supermarkets, offers nutritional benefits such as a lower glycaemic index, improved mineral absorption, and gut health support due to fermentation. However, it is not a miracle food and should be consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Sourdough bread vs White bread: From cafe menus to supermarket shelves, sourdough has become one of the most popular breads in recent years. Often marketed as a healthier alternative to regular white bread, it has found a loyal fan base among fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious eaters. But is it really better for you?

Unlike regular bread, which is made using commercial yeast, sourdough is prepared using a natural starter of wild yeast and bacteria. This slow fermentation process gives it its distinctive tangy flavour, chewy texture and a few nutritional advantages.

In a recent Instagram video, nutritionist Deepshikha Jain explained that the long fermentation process increases beneficial bacteria and makes sourdough a prebiotic, which may support gut health. She also noted that fermentation reduces phytic acid, an anti-nutrient that can interfere with the absorption of minerals, making certain nutrients easier for the body to absorb.

Sourdough also has a lower glycaemic index than many regular white breads, meaning it is digested more slowly and may lead to a steadier rise in blood sugar levels. Pairing it with vegetables and a source of protein can help lower the overall glycaemic load of a meal even further.

That said, sourdough isn’t a miracle food. It still contains carbohydrates, and not every loaf sold as sourdough is made using traditional fermentation methods. Wholegrain sourdough made with simple ingredients is generally a healthier choice than refined white bread.

Like most foods, sourdough is best enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. While it may offer some nutritional benefits, what you eat with it matters just as much as the bread itself.
