Six common healthy eating mistakes you may be making

Healthy eating does not always require strict diets. Cutting out food groups, trusting “healthy” labels, eating too little protein, ignoring portions, drinking sugary beverages and blindly following diet trends can undermine balanced eating and make healthy habits difficult to sustain.

Hyderabad: Eating healthy is not always about following a strict diet. Sometimes, small habits that seem healthy can actually make it harder to maintain a balanced diet. Here are some common mistakes people make without realising it.

Cutting out entire food groups

Avoiding carbohydrates, fats or other food groups completely may seem like a quick way to eat healthier. However, the body needs a variety of nutrients. A balanced diet is generally more sustainable than eliminating entire food groups without a medical reason.

Assuming everything labelled ‘healthy’ is healthy

Words such as “natural”, “low-fat” or “sugar-free” can make a product seem like a better choice. However, these labels do not tell you the whole nutritional story. Checking the ingredient list and nutrition information can give you a clearer picture.

Eating too little protein

A meal consisting mainly of vegetables or carbohydrates may leave you hungry again soon. Including protein-rich foods such as pulses, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds or lean meats can make meals more filling.

Ignoring portion sizes

Even nutritious foods can contribute to excess calorie intake when eaten in very large quantities. Paying attention to portions can be more useful than completely avoiding favourite foods.

Drinking calories without noticing

Sweetened coffee, packaged juices, soft drinks and other beverages can add significant amounts of sugar to your daily intake. Choosing water or unsweetened drinks more often can help.

Following diet trends blindly

What works for one person may not work for another. Extreme diets or restrictive eating patterns can be difficult to maintain and may not provide all the nutrients your body needs.

Healthy eating is less about perfection and more about building balanced, sustainable habits that you can follow consistently.
