Hyderabad: Former Minister and senior BRS MLA G Jagadish Reddy slammed Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for surrendering Telangana’s rights on Godavari and Krishna river water to Andhra Pradesh. He alleged that Revanth Reddy was acting under the influence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and had delivered him a “Sankranthi gift” by conceding Godavari river water rights.
He accused the government of filing a weak petition in the Supreme Court prepared under Chandrababu Naidu’s direction. He said the petition was dismissed, exposing the government’s lack of preparedness and understanding of irrigation issues.
Speaking to mediapersons at Telangana Bhavan on Monday, Jagadish Reddy questioned why the State government approached the Supreme Court instead of first taking the matter to the Apex Council. “Neither the Chief Minister nor the Irrigation Minister know where the Banakacherla or Nallamala Sagar projects are located,” he said, adding that they were acting without basic knowledge or institutional process.
The former Minister criticised Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy for grandstanding at the Supreme Court without presenting a strong case. He also questioned why the government had not pushed Delhi for permissions related to the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project, despite earlier accusing former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of unnecessarily confronting the Centre.
Calling the Congress government clueless and fearful of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jagadish Reddy reminded that the BRS had alerted the government to the dangers posed by the Banakacherla project. He asserted that only Chandrashekhar Rao had the commitment to protect Telangana’s water rights and accused the current leadership of incompetence and prioritising self-interest over the State’s welfare.
He charged that the Chief Minister and Ministers were focused more on deals and appeasement than safeguarding Telangana’s interests. He accused them of mortgaging Telangana’s river water rights for their political safety. “This government is surviving on Chandrababu Naidu’s mercy,” he added.
