Hyderabad: Opposing the Adani Group’s Ambuja cement factory in Ramannapet, former Minister and senior BRS MLA G Jagadish Reddy pledged to prevent its establishment, warning about its severe environmental impact in at least 10 villages directly and surrounding areas in Yadadri Bhongir district. He cautioned that it would also pollute the nearby Musi River posing a threat to its survival.
Speaking at Telangana Bhavan on Wednesday, Jagadish Reddy expressed solidarity with the people of Ramannapet, voicing their opposition to the project, which he said will destroy the local environment. “Ramannapet mandal will become barren if the Ambuja cement factory is allowed. Even animals will be deprived of grass to eat,” he stated, echoing public concerns over the potential impact on agriculture and water resources.
The former Minister slammed the State government over the arrests of former BRS MLAs Chirumarthi Lingaiah, Gadari Kishore Kumar, Ravindra Kumar Naik, Bhupal Reddy and former MP Badugula Lingaiah Yadav ahead of public hearing. He demanded that the State government organise another public hearing and also respect the people’s concerns.
Jagadish Reddy also questioned the silence of other opposition parties and intellectuals including MLC M Kodandaram and rights activist Haragopal. He said those who spoke against construction of irrigation projects by former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and called it destruction, are not speaking up about the pollution of the Musi River caused due to the proposed cement factory.
He raised concerns about environmental degradation from both the Damagundam and Ramannapet projects, especially their impact on the Musi River, which the government had promised to use to revive and supply drinking water to erstwhile Nalgonda district.
