Jane Austen’s 250th birth anniversary celebrated at Satavahana University
Satavahana University marked the 250th birth anniversary of English writer Jane Austen at its Arts College. Speakers highlighted her focus on middle-class life, women’s independence and social issues, urging students to draw inspiration from her works and life

Karimnagar: The 250th birth anniversary of English writer Jane Austen was celebrated at Satavahana University on Tuesday. The Department of English organised the programme at the Arts College.
Participating as chief guest, Prof Surepalli Sujatha said Jane Austen’s works focused on middle-class life, women’s issues, marriage, economic conditions and the importance of independence for women.
Prof Sujatha recalled reading Austen’s novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’ during her intermediate studies and said Austen’s writings and letters offered valuable lessons for contemporary society. She urged students to study the lives of such writers and draw inspiration to build a strong foundation for future generations.
Head of the Department Dr Vijayprakash, who presided over the programme, said Jane Austen was born into an intellectual family and made significant contributions to English literature. She wrote extensively about family systems, domestic life and the countryside of rural England, he said, and advised students to take inspiration from her novels.
The programme was attended by English Department faculty members Dr Pradeep Raj, Harikrishna, Dr Joseleena, and students.
