Hyderabad: A Kanyavandanam festival was celebrated at Haridaspur village in Sangareddy district on Sunday. Chilkur Balaji temple chief archaka, CS Rangarajan applied Parani to the little girls at the programme which was attended by the village elders along with Revenue department officials and DRDA, Srinivasa Rao.

“Through this worship, we want to revive the respect for women and girls”, Rangarajan said.

Acid attacks, rape, female foeticide, dowry deaths were happening and the society is unable to find an answer, he said adding, “The answer lies in restoring the divine status to the women. Women are the exact form of Mahalakshmi. These atrocities have increased recently and we are all to blame for it.”

Suresh Joshi of Brahmin Seva Sanstha, a welfare association, along with few donors gifted Rs 5,000 for the Sukanya Samruddhi scheme, a press release said. Another village nearby, Eddumailaram also wanted to adopt a similar practice of celebrating the birth of the girl child.
