Hyderabad: Stating that the delay in conducting the Census was hindering India’s growth, BRS leader and MLC K Kavitha has raised concerns over the big reduction in funds allocated for the Census, from Rs 8,754 Cr proposed in 2019 to just Rs 574 Cr now. She said the roadmap to progress cannot be built on mere idealistic statements but requires solid data and surveys that define the true picture of India. She stressed that data drives progress.

Kavitha questioned how growth can be planned without understanding the people it serves and the socio-economic fabric of society. She highlighted that the absence of Census and caste data makes it challenging to formulate progressive policies that enable inclusive development. Kavitha demanded that the central government make an announcement regarding the Census and address the issue promptly.

Kavitha also pointed out that the drastic reduction in funds allocated for the Census is a significant concern. The initial proposal in 2019 was Rs 8,754 Cr, which has now been reduced to just Rs 574 Cr. This reduction in funds is seen as a major obstacle to conducting a comprehensive and accurate Census. Without adequate funding, it is challenging to carry out the necessary surveys and data collection that are essential for understanding the true demographic and socioeconomic landscape of the country.

Kavitha emphasised that the Census is not just a routine exercise but a critical tool for planning and implementing policies that drive inclusive growth and development.
