Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s ‘Mission Mumbai’ on Sunday turned out to be a highly successful exercise with his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar joining him in categorically stating that the need of the hour for the country was ‘Parivartan’ (Change) to check the political hegemony of BJP government at the Centre and save democracy.
Chandrashekhar Rao, who had a luncheon meeting with Thackeray at ‘Varsha’ first before meeting with Pawar, said there was a broad consensus among the three leaders to work together to protect the federal spirit of the country. “This is a good beginning and we will meet again after speaking to other regional and like-minded parties,” he said at joint media conferences first with Thackeray and then with Pawar.
Sunday’s meeting of the three political bigwigs is being seen as a significant development that would lead to opposition unity at the national level to take on the BJP effectively.
Addressing the media, Chandrashekhar Rao and Thackeray, stating that the meeting was long overdue, said they were consulting leaders of various national and regional political parties that were willing to join hands. A meeting with all like-minded political forces will be convened shortly to decide the way forward. “We need a qualitative change in this country. We must strengthen the nation together. The ethos of the nation should remain intact and it needs a direction,” Chandrashekhar Rao said.
Emphasising the need to build an ‘inclusive India’, the visiting Chief Minister said they will work together drawing inspiration from Chatrapathi Shivaji. “Be it Shivaji Maharaj or Balasaheb Thackeray, all the movements which started from Maharashtra were a big success. We are hopeful that we too will succeed,” he said.
Thackeray said the meeting had sparked a ‘new idea’ for the country. “The level of politics in the country has stooped to a new low and politics of revenge is neither part of Hindutva nor Indian culture. There is a need to change the present political scenario since our Hindutva does not teach revenge politics that is not good for the country,” he said.
“Instead of speaking about development issues during their tenure, lies and misinformation are being spread about political opponents,” Thackeray said, in a veiled attack on the BJP.
Sharad Pawar, after his two-hour meeting with Chandrashekhar Rao, told the media that Telangana had shown the direction for the nation to follow, particularly in farm reforms. “Chandrashekhar Rao should be appreciated for his efforts. Development, development and development was discussed and it was decided to put in place a strategy after taking other parties on board,” he said.
The Telangana Chief Minister, who has already met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and is in touch with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has taken the lead role in bringing together non-BJP parties together and his visit to Mumbai was part of this exercise. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and RLD leader Tejashwi Yadav also called on Chandrashekhar Rao in January this year.
