Hyderabad: All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Mallikarjun Kharge challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government to remove the word ‘Secular’ from the Indian Constitution and questioned its commitment in safeguarding constitutional values.

Referring to an RSS leader’s demand to remove ‘Secular’ word from the Constitution, the AICC chief wondered if the saffron party had hatred towards socialism and secularism, why were these words included in its Constitution

“None can remove the Secular and Socialist words from the Constitution and the Congress will fight against any such attempts,” Kharge said at a public meeting here on Friday.

The AICC chief reminded that after the Pahalgam terror attack, the Congress and other parties had extended full support to the Central government in waging a war against Pakistan. However, the Prime Minister skipped the all-party meeting, but campaigned for Bihar elections, he stated.

“Modi visited 42 countries but did not visit Manipur. This is his love for the nation,” Kharge said.

Before waging the war against Pakistan, the Prime Minister had vowed to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir but suspended the war abruptly and misled the people, he charged.

Questioning BJP’s contribution to Telangana’s growth, he said nearly 50 central government institutions were established in the region by the Congress government in the past. In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to deposit Rs 15 lakh in each bank account and 2 crore jobs annually, did he fulfil these promises, he asked the gathering.

“People have to be cautious of BJP’s deceitful tactics and strengthen the Congress,” Kharge said.

The AICC chief claimed that after Congress came to power in Telangana, the poor, women and other sections had got relief. The promises made to the people in the State were fulfilled, he said, listing out free bus travel for women, free power and Rythu Bharosa assistance for farmers.

“We will continue to fight for implementation of 42 per cent reservations to Backward Classes,” the AICC chief asserted.
