Hyderabad: BJP State leader’s remark likening Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to ‘Desh Drohi’ (traitor) evoked strong resentment on social media platforms, with many asking for an explanation as to how Prime Minister Narendra Modi who left the agitating farmers to their fate for nearly an year was a ‘Desh Bhakt’, while Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao who announced Rs 3 lakh ex gratia to the kin of the deceased farmers, was a traitor.

At a press conference here on Sunday, BJP State president Bandi Sanjay and other leaders called the Chief Minister a ‘Desh Drohi’ (traitor) for announcing compensation for the kin of farmers who died during the ongoing agitation against farm laws. They went on to say that the Chief Minister had announced Rs 3 lakh ex gratia for ‘Khalistanis’.

Hitting back at the BJP State leaders for calling Chief Minister a ‘traitor’, TRS working president and Minister KT Rama Rao demanded to know the logic behind what he termed as a strange argument put forward by the BJP leaders.

In a tweet, the Minister wondered how the BJP leaders who left behind thousands of poor farmers on the streets through a killer cold wave and Covid-19 to their fate for a year can be called as Desh Bhakts. “And those that extend a helping hand are Traitors?! Strange logic this. Who are these morons to issue certification on Desh Bhakti anyway? (sic)” he questioned.

Several Cabinet Ministers and also Twitterati joined Rama Rao to raise questions over the BJP’s statement. Twitterati strongly condemned the statement terming the farmers who fought for their rights as ‘Khalistanis’, and asked if democracy was a lost cause in BJP’s India. They demanded to know if Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised to ‘Khalistanis’ when he announced repealing the farm laws.

Legislative Affairs Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy ridiculed the BJP State leaders for responding to the Chief Minister’s announcement, but ignoring the Prime Minister’s apologies to farmers. He said while Prime Minister Modi apologised to farmers for bringing three new farm laws, Telangana BJP leaders had not issued any statement on that and instead, responded to Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao’s announcement of Rs 3 lakh ex gratia.

Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy pointed out that the entire world had witnessed the anti-farmer policies of the BJP government at the Centre which has caused trauma to farmers, witnessed their anger, and the party was now trying to hide itself. Forests Minister A Indrakaran Reddy said it was unfortunate that the BJP leaders, who had mowed down farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri and left them to die in a pool of blood, were speaking about ‘traitors’.
