Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Wednesday said the Congress government was pushing farmers in Telangana into unprecedented distress due to the prolonged shortage of urea and fertilisers. He held Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy responsible for lack of planning and sincerity in addressing the issue.

He demanded that the Chief Minister release a white paper on urea stocks, pointing out that both the Congress government in the State and the BJP government at the Centre were making contradictory claims.

Speaking to the media at his Nandinagar residence, Rama Rao said farmers had been suffering for the past two months across villages and towns, standing in long queues for fertilisers and urea. He said the Chief Minister was neglecting the farming sector due to gross incompetence and petty politics.

“Never in Telangana’s history have police been deployed to distribute fertilisers. Why has this situation come after the Congress came to power? Farmers are being forced to fall at the feet of officials just for a bag of urea,” he charged, citing an incident at the Thorrur PACS in Mahabubabad.

The BRS working president contrasted the current situation with the previous BRS government, stating that it had built buffer stocks, expanded warehouse capacity from 4 lakh to 24 lakh metric tonnes, and ensured advance supplies before every cropping season.

“During the BRS rule, fertilisers were procured from across India in advance and delivered without delay. Farmers never stood in lines nor fought for urea,” he said.

Stating that Revanth Reddy had failed to hold even a single review on agriculture or fertilisers, he said the Chief Minister was not pursuing the issue with the Centre either.

“There is no planning, no review, no indent, no preparation. This government knows only petty politics, not governance. Despite visiting Delhi 51 times, Revanth Reddy failed to secure fertiliser supplies,” he alleged.

He urged farmers to reflect on why the crisis had emerged only under the Congress regime. He also alleged that Congress leaders themselves were diverting the stocks to the black market, creating an artificial shortage.

Responding to a question, Rama Rao said the upcoming Vice-Presidential election was being turned into a drama and questioned why the Congress had not fielded a BC candidate from Telangana. Clarifying that the BRS was not aligned with either the INDIA bloc or the NDA, he asserted that neither Rahul Gandhi nor Narendra Modi was their boss.

“The people of Telangana are our boss. Whoever brings 2 lakh metric tonnes of urea to Telangana will have our support,” he declared.
