Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao called for a united and all-party effort to secure constitutional recognition for Backward Class (BC) reservations, akin to the Telangana Statehood movement. Urging both the BJP and Congress to rise above politics for the cause of social justice, he reiterated that BC reservations could be realised only through Parliamentary procedure in Delhi, and not just through protests on the streets.
“If Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi are genuinely committed, the BC reservation issue can be resolved over a cup of tea. If both INDIA Bloc and NDA support it, the bill will become law immediately. All our four Rajya Sabha MPs will vote for it without hesitation. The fight for BC reservations should now be taken to Delhi, just like we fought for Telangana,” he said, extending support of the BRS to the BC Bandh called by various BC organisations on October 18.
Speaking at a meeting with Rajya Sabha MP R Krishnaiah and leaders of various BC organisations on Wednesday, Rama Rao pointed out that BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was the first leader to demand the establishment of an OBC Welfare Department at the national level. Telangana had twice passed resolutions in the Legislative Assembly in support of enhanced BC reservations, but the Congress failed to champion the issue when it mattered, he said, charging the Congress government with doublespeak.
Stating that the Congress government had made contradictory statements by promising reservations through a constitutional amendment, ordinance, or bill, and at times, linking it to Rahul Gandhi becoming the Prime Minister, he said this inconsistency showed their lack of sincerity. The BRS working president also criticised Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, calling his commitment to BC welfare hollow like a puja without devotion. He doubted whether Revanth Reddy would ever allow it. The Congress brought 42 per cent reservation only for local bodies, but the same share should be extended to education, employment, and all other sectors, including government contracts, he said.
“The Congress government talks big about BC empowerment but has failed to deliver even one rupee from the promised Rs.1 lakh crore outlay for BC declaration or to implement a BC sub-plan,” he said, urging BC organisations to intensify their struggle and pledging that BRS would stand by the BC community until justice was achieved.
