Mancherial: Fresh lemons are now being sold by the kilogram instead of loose pieces in Mancherial, surprising residents and lemon lovers alike. The shift in trading practice is attributed to the sharp rise in prices of the citrus fruit in the district following a dip in supply.
An important source of vitamin C, lemons are commonly grown in backyards in many rural households. In the past, people often shared them with neighbours, relatives and friends free of cost. Vegetable vendors would sometimes give lemons in place of change while selling produce. However, locals say they are now buying lemons at around Rs.120 a kg instead of four fruits for Rs.20 as was the case just a few weeks ago.
The steep increase in prices has not only surprised residents but also forced many to cut down consumption. Several people in the town say they are hesitating to buy lemons due to the high prices and are exploring alternatives such as tamarind and gooseberry. Incidentally, lemon prices tend to rise during summer, which is also the peak season for marriages. Lemons are traditionally served during lunches at weddings, social gatherings, religious rituals and family functions, as they are believed to help reduce inflammation and improve immunity.
Local traders said the dip in supply from Andhra Pradesh and some other neighbouring regions has led to the spike in prices. They expressed hope that prices may come down once production increases and with the onset of the monsoon.
