Adilabad: A Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)-based crematorium was used for the first time to cremate the body of a Covid-19 victim in Adilabad town on Thursday. The town’s municipality created the facility at an estimated cost of Rs 12 lakh for the convenience of the public in the wake of the ongoing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A Shailaja, Adilabad municipal commissioner, told Telangana Today that the gas-based cremation was granted to the urban civic body since it has a population over 1 lakh. She stated that the facility was operational from Wednesday. Bodies of the Covid-19 patients are cremated for free, while families belonging to below poverty line can avail it for free and others will be charged Rs 2,000 to cremate a body, she explained.
Considering the scarcity of firewood and the requirement to dispose of bodies of Covid-19 patients, the crematorium was allotted to 15 civic bodies across Telangana.
The facility was created on the outskirts of Mavala mandal centre. One can avail the facility by contacting the sanitary inspector of the municipality and deputy executive engineer on 89196 96007 and 99636 41985, respectively.
According to the commissioner, streets of the town are being kept clean by intensifying sanitation activities in the town ever since the second wave broke out. Sodium hypochlorite is being sprayed in the streets where positive cases were reported and the infected are being identified with the help of local councilors. The patients are being given medical kits, and their medical condition is being tracked through Asha workers.
