Mahabubabad: The Town police won the hearts of the people on Monday when they performed the last rites of an unclaimed body here.

According to police sources, a destitute woman was found lying in an unconscious state due to hunger and sunstroke near the police station three days ago. Noticing her, the police immediately rushed her to the district government hospital in the town in an attempt to save her life. But the doctors at the hospital declared her brought dead.

Following this, the police kept the body in the hospital morgue hoping that her relatives would come forward to claim the body. But no one turned up to take her body. Moved by the tragic end of the woman, the police decided to perform her last rites themselves. The police led by Circle Inspector Venkataratnam and SI Santhosh Kumar shifted the body to the graveyard and buried her following the tradition.

They placed a wreath on the body and offered last respects. “Everyone should appreciate the police for their humanitarian act. At a time when even relatives are scared of touching the body of the dead due to Covid-19 fear, the police came forward to conduct the last rites,” Chittanuri Srinivas, a local scribe, said.
