Mahabubnagar: The wait for a super specialty hospital continues for the people of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s home district, Mahabubnagar.
More than two-and-a-half years after the foundation stone was laid, the Congress government is yet to complete the construction of the proposed 1,000-bed super specialty hospital. Given the current pace of work, officials and local residents believe it could take at least another six months before the facility becomes operational.
In December 2022, former Health Minister T. Harish Rao laid the foundation stone for the Rs 300-crore hospital on the premises of the old Collectorate opposite the RTC bus stand.
Construction progressed rapidly during the tenure of the BRS government. However, after the Congress came to power, work slowed considerably, leading to disappointment among residents who have been eagerly awaiting the facility.
The new hospital was proposed to address the growing burden on the existing Government General Hospital (GGH), which is struggling to cope with the increasing number of patients.
The current hospital also lacks several specialized medical services, forcing doctors to refer patients to Hyderabad-based hospitals such as Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences and Osmania General Hospital.
Around 3,000 patients visit the GGH every day for treatment across 14 specialties. Once operational, the super specialty hospital is expected to offer advanced services including neurosurgery, urology, kidney transplantation, and oncology treatment.
According to the plan, the hospital complex was to comprise five blocks. While civil works in Blocks A, B, C and D have been completed, construction of Block E has been delayed due to various reasons, including legal issues.
Even in the completed blocks, critical infrastructure such as beds, chairs, operation theatres, MRI and CT scan facilities, and other medical equipment is yet to be installed. In Block E, only three floors have been completed against the planned five floors.
The Government General Hospital serves not only patients from Mahabubnagar district but also those from neighboring districts such as Wanaparthy, Jogulamba Gadwal and Narayanpet. A significant number of patients from Raichur also depend on the facility, as travelling to Hyderabad is often time-consuming and expensive.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital extended treatment to patients from neighboring states, including Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, highlighting its importance as a regional healthcare hub.
