Hyderabad: A private employee from Balanagar was cheated of Rs 72,000 by unidentified persons posing as PhonePe customer care executives. The victim, through an e-wallet, had sent Rs 2,800 to his friend but did not get any receipt or message of the transaction. He searched Google for the customer care number and called on it.
“When he called, the person on the other side assured a refund and asked him to download an app on the phone. During this process, he collected important details and asked to send Rs 1, which was done,” said an official, adding that within minutes, in five installments, a total of Rs 72,000 was siphoned off from the bank account.
Based on a complaint, a case was booked.
