Mancherial: A court hearing the bail petition of Balka Suman, district president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), in connection with a case relating to the alleged attack on the convoy of Labour Minister Dr G Vivek and Peddapalli MP G Vamshikrishna, has posted the matter for further hearing on Tuesday.

The First Class Additional Court heard arguments on the petition but postponed the matter after the police sought time to file a counter. Suman’s counsel argued that the allegations did not constitute serious offences.

On February 18, Suman was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days and lodged in a jail at the Adilabad district headquarters. A case was registered against him and eight others for allegedly attacking the minister’s convoy, unlawful assembly, rioting, injuring a constable and obstructing a sub-inspector while police personnel were on bandobast duty at Kyathanpalli on February 17.

According to sources, Suman and other BRS leaders were allegedly targeted following the party’s victory in 14 wards of the 22-member Kyathanpalli municipality, dealing a blow to the ruling Indian National Congress in the minister’s constituency. A special meeting for the selection of the municipal governing council was postponed twice amid alleged ruckus by Congress councillors.

Meanwhile, the Ramakrishnapur police drew criticism for allegedly conducting searches at the residences of Suman and another accused, Dinesh, in Kyathanpalli on Sunday night without prior permission. Ramakrishnapur SI Sridhar and two constables were reportedly involved in the search and were accused of threatening a computer operator.

The police were also accused of seizing mobile phones belonging to former councillor Revalli Odelu and Srinivas, besides detaining Dinesh from Kyathanpalli.
