Kothagudem: Maoists have detained around 15 adivasis from Cherla mandal in the district in their camps in Chhattisgarh, the district police said on Wednesday.
A statement from the district police here said the banned CPI (Maoist) leaders forcefully mobilised adivasis of Bodanelli and Kurlapalli villages in Cherla mandal for a meeting on Tuesday to Pesarlapadu in Chhattisgarh.
Maoist BKEG Committee secretary Azad and LGS leader Madhu told the tribals to bring some more villagers for their meeting and only then would the ‘detainees’ be released, police said, adding that they have credible information about the incident.
Maoists were also harassing adivasis to protest against government programmes and police camps. Realising that police forces were gradually taking over Maoist-affected areas in the district, Maoists forced Cherla adivasis to attend their meetings in Chhattisgarh, the statement said, adding that Adivasis were being robbed of rice, vegetables and money by the Maoist party, which had completely lost the support of the people due to such acts.
