Hyderabad: Surgeons from Medicover Hospitals on Wednesday announced successful treatment of a 46-year-old patient suffering from a rare and debilitating esophageal disorder that made it very difficult for him to swallow food.
The patient, Osman Babikr Elhaj, had been battling severe swallowing difficulty for nearly two and a half years. His condition was marked by nasal regurgitation of food, persistent chest pain, and an inability to consume adequate nutrition, leading to a drastic weight loss of over 25 kilograms.
Dr Moka Praneeth, Senior Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist from hospital, identified a markedly dilated esophagus filled with retained food. A CT scan revealed severe narrowing at the junction of the esophagus and stomach, with the esophagus dilated up to 7.1 cm.
To avoid conventional open or laparoscopic surgery, Dr Praneeth performed an advanced, minimally invasive endoscopic procedure known as Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM).
The procedure is scarless and carried out entirely through the mouth using advanced endoscopic instruments. Following the procedure, the patient is now able to eat comfortably, surgeons said.
