With the record breaking attempt, Vyom Sharma has established
his name in the World Records India.
Hyderabad: It took close to six months of dedicated practice for eight-year-old speedcubing prodigy Vyom Sharma to hone his skills solving the Rubik’s Cube. With an aptitude for the cube since the age of 6, Vyom Sharma has now become the youngest speedcuber to solve a 3x3x3 cube blindfolded in 14 minutes and 5 secs in India, a feat he achieved in April, which established his name in World Records India.
Vyom’s mother, Preeti Sharma, says, “He displayed a fascination with the cube from an early age. So, we enrolled him in classes that exposed him to different types of cubes like pyraminx, 2x2x2, 3x3x3, skewb. He is a bright child and is equally good at puzzles, and mathematics,” she says.
Before the pandemic, Vyom, a student of Sriram International School had been part of a group of students learning to solve the Rubik’s Cube at his apartment complex under the guidance of well-known speedcuber and World Cube Association (WCA) delegate Pavan Akula. Observing his skill with the cube, Pavan suggested Vyom try his hand at a record attempt to his parents.
“We found that there was no record for youngest cuber to solve the cube. So we decided to try for that title and through online coaching, we spent a couple of hours every day since November,” adds Pavan. They kept everything by the book and even followed the World Cube Association norms when making such an attempt.
“Typically, if you see some of the videos of such attempts, the participant is just wearing a blindfold and solves the cube. But, we even kept an A4 size sheet between Vyom who wore a blindfold and the cube. So, it was all done in a proper way,” explains Pavan.
For now, the family is jubilant that their young son has achieved this remarkable feat. Whether Vyom goes professional with his hobby is a decision his parents want to leave to him, when he comes of age.
