Mel Gibson says friends cured of cancers with infection drugs. Can natural cure work?

Hyderabad: Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson, in a podcast with comedian Joe Rogan, said three of his friends had cured their stage 4 cancers after taking drugs like ivermectin and fenbendazole usually taken to treat intestinal and other worm infections.

Discussing his distrust of official medical advice, Gibson told Rogan, “I don’t believe that there is anything that can afflict mankind that hasn’t got a natural cure for it. I think that there has to be — it just makes sense to me. Now, I couldn’t prove it, but I just believe that there’s got to be something that cures things.”

The Mad Max actor claimed that his friends were totally in good health after taking those drugs. “This stuff works man,” he added.

Does it really? Health experts and cancer specialists urge caution as treatment for many cancers remains in infancy.

However, some preliminary studies suggest that ivermectin and fenbendazole combined with other therapies might work in cancer treatment. The drugs have been found to shrink and also halt the growth of certain tumour cells. Still, these needed to be validated by larger clinical trials.

In a 2021 study, researchers tested the potential of ivermectin combined with other drugs used in treating breast and pancreatic cancers. While the results on mice were promising, outcomes in human clinical trials were uncertain. This trial was withdrawn for unforeseen reasons.

On the other hand, researchers warn of the potential risks of using fenbendazole as it can cause significant side effects. Experts say ivermectin is not a cure or even an effective treatment for cancers.
Experts also caution that abandoning prevalent treatments in favour of experiments and trial therapies could lead to dire consequences.

Claims of natural treatment
In 2019, BJP leader Sadhvi Pragya claimed she cured her breast cancer by consuming cow urine and other traditional medicine. “I was a patient of cancer and I cured myself by consuming gau mutr (cow urine) and panchgavya mixed Ayurvedic herbs,” she said.

Panchagavya is prepared by mixing five cow products: cow dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee. These are mixed in proper ratio and then allowed to ferment. She called the cure scientific, saying, “I am a living example of its effectiveness.”

Recently, former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu declared that his wife was cancer-free and gave the credit to herbal drinks, intermittent fasting, a strict diet plan approved by Ayurveda and herbs like neem and turmeric.

Soon after sharing the news, the former Lok Sabha member received huge backlash from experts for ‘misguiding’ the public on the internet. Doctors slammed Sidhu saying cancer is not flu or an infection that can be cured using Ayurveda.

They said Ayurveda is a natural healing system that cleanses the body and strengthens natural defences by maintaining a balance and not a treatment to cure the cancer.
