Karimnagar: In the wake of the increasing demand for mobile eateries, the Fisheries Department has come up with an innovative idea to provide employment opportunities to the fisherfolk, especially women.
So far, people from the fishermen community were confined to selling raw fish in markets and other places on mopeds and other vehicles provided by the State government. Under the new initiative, the fisherfolks will also be selling fish dishes, thanks to the Fisheries Department’s innovative idea of introducing Mobile Fish Retail Outlets that is expected to give other private mobile eateries a run for their money.
Though a number of mobile outlets are being run by individuals, the government’s intention is to launch mobile fish retail outlets to provide employment to the fishermen community.
Financed by the National Fisheries Development Board, the scheme will be supported by the State government, G Rajanarsiah, District Fisheries Officer, told Telangana Today, adding that 10 mobile fish retail outlets had been sanctioned for Karimnagar district. The beneficiaries had also been identified, he added
Under the scheme, beneficiaries would be provided Rs 10 lakh worth of mobile fish retail outlets at 60 per cent subsidy. Beneficiaries will have to pay Rs 4 lakh towards their contribution and the remaining Rs 6 lakh would be a subsidy.
Besides a freezer to store fish, the mobile outlets will have trays, a cutting machine, a weighing machine, oven, pans and other instruments that would be available in the outlet to cook fish. Depending on their culinary skills, beneficiaries can fish chips, pakodas, bajji, pickles and other dishes. Besides preparing different dishes, beneficiaries can also continue with their business of selling raw fish alongside in the same vehicle.
Rajanarsiah said that fisherwomen who have skills in processing fish and preparation of different varieties of fish dishes will get opportunities under the scheme. The scheme will be launched in the district once all the 10 beneficiaries deposit their contribution, he added.
