Karimnagar: Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar, which is working with an aim to supply 24/7 water to the residents of the town, is planning to launch the same in a few localities on pilot basis very soon.
Laying of pipelines, fixing of meters and other works have reached the final stage. If all goes well, supply of round the clock water in selected areas will start by the end of this month.
The municipal authorities are planning to inaugurate a 24/7 water supply pilot project with the union Urban Development Minister Manoharlal Kattar.
First ever in the state, the MCK created a record by starting the supply of daily water by taking up works with Rs 109 crore under Mission Bhagiratha. The then Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, KT Rama Rao started the scheme on July 21, 2020.
Moved with the success of daily water supply, corporation authorities had decided to provide round the clock water to the residents of town and taken up works under Karimnagar Smart City programme. Corporation authorities have decided to implement it in a few localities initially. Though there are 17 reservoirs in the town, officials have decided to supply water initially to the areas that fall under housing board colony reservoir limits and taken up works with Rs 18 crore.
Besides laying a 2.310 kilometer high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline, seven bulk flow motors and 100 mm dia gate valves (in six places) are fixed. Deciding to supply water to 4,455 taps as part of the pilot project, officials have started fixation of meters to taps. It has reached the final stage.
Housing board colony and Maruthinagar localities would be covered completely while a portion of the areas in varahaswamy temple, kapuwada, hussenipura, gayatrainagar and shashab street would also get water.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Karimnagar Mayor Y Sunil Rao said that MCK, which created a record by launching daily water supply in the state, is going to be the first corporation to provide 24/7 water. Except Chandigarh, no other municipality in the country was supplying 24/7 water. Chandigarh has started supplying water to only 1,000 connections.
However, they are going to provide water to 4,455 houses. Every day, 60 MLD water is being supplied to residents of Karimnagar town. Similar quantity of water was enough for the round the clock water supply system.
Moreover, it was possible to put an end to water wastage. People usually store water in buckets and drums with a doubt whether water would be supplied the next day or not. The locals then fill water next time whenever during the water supply by throwing away the stored water.
If water was available 24/7, they would not store. If round the clock water supply was launched, people would not waste water since they have to pay money for water used by them, the Mayor opined.
