Suryapet: A series of unexplained deaths in quick succession has lent an eerie twist to normal life in Jammigadda locality, part of the 20th ward in the district headquarters town of Suryapet, forcing residents to desert their homes at least for a full day.
Overcome by panic sparked by fears of a curse, the dwellers resolved unanimously to vacate the ward on Sunday.
This mass exodus, driven by superstitions, paved the way for forced picnicking.
Though not a joyful outing, it resembled a sombre group activity prompted by deep-rooted worries.
Many of the residents happened to be well-educated teachers and quite knowledgeable, their pleas against unsettling trends had no impact on the rest.
The nightmare began with one death and before the traditional mourning period could end, four more deaths occurred.
Stricken with fear and convinced that the area was cursed by evil spirits, the residents have collectively decided to leave their homes and spend a full day elsewhere.
The local authorities are yet to comment on the situation, but it highlights the urgent need for the administration’s support to dispel the fears of the residents.
