Mystery shrouds death of degree student who died by suicide in Mancherial
This is the second such incident reported from TSRDC–Mancherial within two months. On April 24, Laxmi Prasanna (19), also a second-year degree student at the same college, died while undergoing treatment after allegedly jumping off the hostel building.
Mancherial: Mystery continues to surround the death of 19-year-old Kummari Swapna, a student of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Degree College (TSRDC) for Girls, Mancherial, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a suspected suicide attempt. She died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Hyderabad on June 27.
Swapna reportedly left her hostel room on the night of June 24 on the pretext of using the washroom and allegedly jumped off the building. She sustained critical injuries in the fall and was initially rushed to a hospital in Mancherial. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to Hyderabad, where she died three days later. Swapna was the daughter of Laxman, a resident of Marthidi village in Bejjur mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district.
Following a complaint lodged by Swapna’s parents, the police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Collector Kumar Deepak constituted a four-member committee comprising the district minority welfare officer, social welfare officer, agriculture officer and a psychiatrist to probe the incident and submit a report within five days.
Investigating officials stated that the motive behind the suspected suicide is yet to be ascertained. “Swapna’s parents have not raised any suspicions over her death in their complaint. She was known to be a brilliant student and an introvert. At present, we have no leads to establish the reasons that may have driven her to take the extreme step,” a police official said.

On April 24, Laxmi Prasanna (19), also a second-year degree student at the same college, died while undergoing treatment after allegedly jumping off the hostel building. Her death triggered widespread outrage, with her family staging a protest demanding justice. Prasanna hailed from Jaggayyapet village in Bheemini mandal.
In another case reported in 2022, parents of Durgam Sharada (19), a second-year MZC student from Mittapalli village in Jaipur mandal, had alleged negligence by the college authorities after she died of fever at a hospital. They claimed she was admitted only after her condition deteriorated significantly.
