Hyderabad: As the winter starts to intensify, nights in Hyderabad are getting longer shrinking the daytime by almost 2 hours. In the summertime, an average day spans over 13 hours, but come winter, the sun time diminishes to just around 11 hours or so.
The average sunrise time in Hyderabad is around 6 am, however, during winters it is around 6.30 am. The sunset, which happens as late as 7 pm during summers, also takes place more than one hour early, around 5.45 pm. During summer, especially during June and July, Hyderabad gets an average daylight time of over 13 hours. As the monsoon approaches and the temperatures in the city start dropping, the day length decreases to approximately 12 hours by October. However, after January, the daylight slowly increases and by April the nights start getting shorter.
“Generally days start getting shorter during winter by an hour due to the solstice. Hyderabad will start enjoying more daylight after February,” says the Director of India Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, Dr K Nagaratna. It is estimated that on December 21, the winter solstice, the nighttime will be more than 13 hours — making it the longest night of the year.
Giving insight about the weather forecast, Dr Nagaratna, adds, “We are expecting the temperatures to be within the normal range during December. The minimum temperature this month will range from 17 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is likely to be around 29 degrees Celsius. Hyderabad will witness hazy weather during the morning.”
What is solstice? Solstice occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. The event takes place twice every year — summer solstice (June 21) and winter solstice (December 21). During the December solstice, Earth is positioned so the sun stays below the North Pole’s horizon — making the days shorter.
