New Delhi: Gurugram hit-and-run victim Shivani Chauhan, alias Sia, said on Friday that the incident became a “national issue” because people could relate to it, adding that her fight was not just for her own benefit.

The woman biker, who was hit by a car while riding, said, “Everyone has supported this cause because everyone has related to this issue. Somewhere or another, some female biker, some girl in some way, or any ordinary person has experienced a similar incident happening to them at some point in their life.”

“People who believe that the perpetrators must be punished are supporting this because there is no value left for humanity in people’s minds anymore; there is no value left for a human life. People have begun to think they are above the law,” she added.

Sia claimed that the accused felt they could escape the charges levelled against them.

According to her, “the law is at fault if a person feels that they are above it.”

“I feel that if someone thinks that they are above the law, then it is the latter’s fault for enabling such behaviour by not punishing their ignorance and arrogance,” Sia added.

Speaking to IANS about those accused of hitting her, she said, “They feel that by posting some videos, they can change the narrative. They can shift the blame and gain sympathy. I feel that strict action should be taken against the perpetrators, because this is not an isolated incident.”

“If I am raising my voice today about injustice, then it is just not for me but for all others who might have faced similar circumstances, be it a man or a woman. I believe justice should prevail, and it should set a precedent for another such incident.”

Meanwhile, a Gurugram court on Friday sent Kalyan Bainsla, the driver accused in the case, and his cousin Lavneesh to 14 days of judicial custody.

Both accused will be produced before the court again after 14 days.
