Hyderabad: After five years, the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) has announced a 14 per cent increase in retail power supply tariffs for the financial year 2022-23 as against the increase of 18 per cent proposed by the Discoms.
With this, domestic consumers will face nominal increase of 10 paise to 50 paise per unit while non-domestic consumers will have to bear increase of Rs 1 per unit. The new charges will come into forces from April 1.
Explaining the factors that led to increase in tariff, TSERC Chairman T Sriranga Rao told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the decision to increase energy charges was taken after eliciting opinion from people, political parties and representatives from Discoms during public hearings conducted at Sircilla, Hanamkonda, Wanaparthy and Hyderabad recently.
“It’s a nominal increase,” he said, adding that the electricity charges were increased five years ago. According to Rao, the average cost of service had increased from Rs.6.04/kWh in Financial Year (FY) 2018-19 to Rs.7.03/kWh in FY 2022-23 registering an increase of 16 per cent.
This increase, he said, was due to the rise in major cost components such as power purchase and distribution costs and transmission charges. The State government gave its consent for subsidy commitment of Rs 8,221.17 crore for FY 2022-23 as against Rs.5,950 crore for FY 2018-18 for the agriculture sector and BPL families registering an increase of 38.39 per cent.
After formation of Telangana, the State government has spent Rs.38,000 crore to develop infrastructure in the power sector resulting in supply of quality power to all sectors in the State.
Pointing out that only Telangana was supplying 24-hour free and quality power supply to the agriculture sector, Rao said there was no tariff revision for salons consuming up to 200 units per month along with cottage industries and agro-based activities. There will be no change in tariff for agriculture category.
The Commission also approved the Discoms proposal to introduce an optional category of green tariff for industrial and commercial consumers who fulfill the requirement of procuring renewable power. The discoms proposed a green tariff of Rs 2 per unit but the Commission approved Rs 0.66 per unit.
Metering
The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TSERC) has asked the discoms to achieve 100 per cent agricultural DTR metering within two years and furnish the quarterly progress on the status of the implementation of its instructions.
