Adilabad: A non-resident Indian from Adilabad, living in Tanzania, was arrested in Mumbai on Thursday for allegedly posting derogatory messages on social media that triggered communal tensions earlier this year.
Adilabad DSP L Jeevan Reddy said in a statement that Shaik Irfan of Khurshidnagar was apprehended with the help of Immigration officials. Irfan, who was the administrator of a WhatsApp group, had allegedly posted derogatory messages in April following the arrest of a rowdy-sheeter, which sparked communal unrest.
Police said a lookout notice had been issued against him. He was detained by Immigration officials when he arrived in Mumbai from Tanzania on Tuesday. The officials then alerted Adilabad police, who took him into custody and shifted him to Adilabad.
He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
