Hyderabad: Discharge of flood waters from Priyadarshini Jurala Project (PJP) downstream continued for the second consecutive day on Sunday with officials from the Irrigation department lifting 11 gates in addition to the five gates that were opened on Saturday.

In all, the officials were releasing 1.20 lakh cusecs including the water used for generating power after lifting 16 gates. Since the project was receiving 70,600 cusecs of water from Narayanpur project in Karnataka apart from the water from catchment areas and Bheema Lift Irrigation Project, the officials were releasing the water downstream.

“We are getting 60,000 cusecs of inflows from Narayanpur,” an official, who monitors the water levels in Jurala, said. Power generation in five units at the project had also started.
Meanwhile, officials of Srisailam Dam said that as many as 80,000 cusecs of water was expected to reach the project by Monday afternoon. “We may be getting eight TMC water from Jurala and catchment areas by Monday,” an official said.

As against its total storage capacity of 216 TMC, the dam presently has 40 TMC of water and by Monday it may touch 48 TMC. “If the same inflows continue in the next few days, we may open the Srisailam gates in the second week of August,” the official said.

He said a special team from the Water Recourses Department (WRD) was continuously monitoring the water levels in Srisailam as it was getting higher inflows from upstream and catchment areas.
