Over 6,000 prisoners lodged in Telangana prisons

Hyderabad: As many as 6,114 prisoners, including 372 women, were lodged in various prisons in Telangana, registering an occupancy rate of 77.9 per cent, according to Prison Statistics India 2020, released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Tuesday.

The total available capacity of prisons in the State is 7,845 prisoners including 703 women prisoners. The prison population in district jails were manageable at the end of 2020 in 12 States including Telangana and union Territories (UT) as the occupancy rate in these States/UTs remained less than 100 per cent.


These States and UTs are Haryana (94.9 per cent), Karnataka (92.5 per cent), Telangana (77.3 per cent), Arunachal Pradesh (76 per cent), Punjab (73.3 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (69.5 per cent), Kerala (61.1 per cent), Mizoram (46.7 per cent), Tripura (44.1 per cent), Tamil Nadu (43.5 per cent), Ladakh (32.5 per cent) and Nagaland (28.4 per cent).

According to the data, over 12 per cent of convicts and around 23 per cent of undertrials in Telangana prisons were qualified with graduation and above. Five persons got death penalty in Telangana in 2020.

Two Pakistan nationals and three Nigerians were among those who were lodged in the prisons as convicts while the under-trials include 37 foreign nationals including two from Pakistan and four from China.
