Hyderabad: The Telangana Prisons recorded 42,566 inmate admissions in 2025, registering an 11.8 per cent increase over the previous year, according to the Prisons Department’s annual report released on Monday.
Of the total admissions, 5,856 were convicted prisoners, an 81 per cent rise from 2024, while undertrials accounted for 36,627 inmates, the majority of them men.
The report flagged a sharp escalation in cybercrime cases, with arrests linked to cyber offences soaring by 135 per cent in 2025.
During the year, a total of 1,784 persons, including both men and women, were booked for cyber-related crimes, making it one of the fastest-growing offence categories.
Drunk-driving cases also rose steeply, with 2,833 arrests recorded, a 150 per cent increase compared to 2024. Property offences accounted for 7,792 inmates, while 7,040 people were booked under the NDPS Act. Admissions of foreign nationals declined to 74 in 2025.
Arrests under the POCSO Act increased marginally to 4,176, while murder cases rose by 18 per cent with 3,260 arrests. Young adults aged 18–30 formed the largest group of inmates, and first-time offenders made up the overwhelming majority.
The department also highlighted rehabilitation efforts, stating that over 23,000 inmates were made literate, 28 completed graduation courses, and a large number of convicted prisoners received skill development training and counselling during the year.
