Suryapet: Expressing anger over the fall in paddy price, a group of farmers on Saturday damaged three weighing machines and set fire to dumps of paddy in in Agricultural market yard at Suryapet and laid a seige on the market yard office. With the paddy price falling to Rs 1200 per quintal from yesterday’s price of Rs 1800, farmers created a ruckus in the market yard demanding stoppage of paddy purchase.
Earlier, paddy was purchased from the farmers at paddy procurement centres at an MSP of Rs 1960 per quintal. With the procurement of paddy stopping for yasangi crop season, the price of paddy came down drastically day by day. The fall of price by Rs 600 per quintal in a single day has created distress among farmers. When the traders did not accept their demand to stop the purchase of the paddy until arrival of the higher officials to the market yard, farmers damaged the weighing machines. They also alleged that traders and officials colluded and reduced the price of the paddy by taking the situation as an advantage.
On the other hand, traders claimed that paddy price crashed as millers were not coming forward to purchase it. Over one lakh quintal of paddy brought to the market by the farmer for sale on the day, which was also one of the reasons for the situation. To bring the situation under control, the district Collector T Vinay Krsihna Reddy rushed to the market yard and held talks with the farmers and traders. He also assured the farmers to take measures to help them to get best price to their crop.
