Nalgonda: Parents of at least 10 students from erstwhile Nalgonda district who are stuck in war-torn Ukraine have appealed to the Centre to ensure their safety and bring them back home at the earliest. Most of these students are pursuing medicine or engineering courses in the troubled country.
Perumalla Ajay Kumar, a native of Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, is pursuing medicine in Ukraine. Following the tense situation, Ajay decided to return to India on Thursday by a special flight that turned back mid-way after the Ukraine airspace was closed in the wake of Russia declaring war against the country. Ajay was just two hours away from boarding the flight.
Speaking to the media here, Ajay’s father Balaswamy said his son would have completed the MBBS course in three months and was to return home in three months in the normal course. Ajay, however, decided to return following the tense situation in Ukraine, Balaswamy said, adding that he spoke with his son over phone and inquired about his safety. “The government should take measures to bring back Indian students stuck in Ukraine,” he said.
Two other students, Ganji Bhanu Prasad and Seshaphani Sharma, hailing from Yadagirigutta in Yadadri-Bhongir district, are also stuck in Ukraine, They are pursuing medicine in Zaporizhzhia National University in Ukraine. The two reached Kiev airport to return but the Russian army had taken control of the airport by then.
Bhanu Prasad’s father Sathyanarayana said he spoke with his son over phone. “My son is in a safe place. He informed me that Indian Embassy officials were also in touch with students stuck in Ukraine and assured them that they would take all the necessary steps to ensure their safety. The officials also assured the students that they would be sent to India safety after flights resume,” he said.
It is learnt that five more students, two each from Mothkur and Huzurnagar and one from Bhongir were also struck in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao has urged External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to ensure the safety of Indian students in Ukraine in these times of distress.
“Appeal to DrSJaishankar Ji to ensure the safety of Indian students in Ukraine in these times of distress. Have been receiving several messages from anxious parents of students. Hope Government of India can work through diplomatic channels & reassure all Indians at the earliest,” the Minister tweeted.
Chevella MP G Ranjith Reddy also appealed to Jaishankar to make necessary arrangements to safely bring back Telangana students who are stuck in Ukraine.
In a letter to the External Affairs Minister, the MP said the Russia-Ukranaine war has left hundreds of Telangana students stranded in Ukraine and they are unable to travel back to India. “It has been learnt that out students are facing several challenges and difficulties due to unfavourable situation caused by the conflict in Ukraine,” he added.
