Hyderabad: A 51-year-old businessman from Nacharam who suffered severe lung damage due to dengue with significant drop in oxygen saturation levels, was successfully treated by critical care specialists at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar.
The patient was admitted in critical condition and was put on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a life-support system that temporarily takes over the functions of heart and lungs of a patient, by critical care specialists Dr. K. Venkataramana and Dr. Sringala Devijan.
Within six-days of initiating ECMO support, the patient recovered, the doctors said. Typically, dengue does not damage the lungs to this extent, but at times, the body’s own immune system attacks its organs. In this case, the immune system attacked the lungs, causing severe lung damage. Many people think of ECMO treatment as a last resort and may hesitate, but if initiated at the right time, the chances of recovery are significantly higher, doctors added.
