Khammam: Lack of funds and facilities at Wyra Government Area Hospital has been troubling patients in Wyra Assembly constituency, the native place of Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
It might be recalled that in October 2023, the then BRS government sanctioned 36 specialist posts and cadre strength of 98 staff across various categories, which included 26 staff nurses, for upgrading the existing Primary Health Centre to Government Area Hospital.
The locals complained that the Congress government which came to power later had completely neglected the hospital. According to CPI (M) Wyra division secretary Bhukya Veerabhadram, the hospital was in a state of disrepair due to lack of funds and even though it was upgraded to a 100-bed hospital, equipment required to provide treatment to patients remained unavailable.
He said CPI (M) Wyra urban committee carried out a survey on the problems of the hospital recently and interacted with the hospital resident medical officer Dr. Balu as well as other doctors and spoke to the patients who came for treatment.
Veerabhadram complained that the poor patients were forced to wait for days as the medical samples of patients had to be sent to Khammam for important blood tests as the Area Hospital was lacking necessary equipment to conduct tests.
He said that medical services were not available for all types of diseases due to shortage of specialist doctors and staff. There was a lack of medicines and injections as well. If pregnant women had to undergo an operation during delivery, they were sent to the Khammam Government General Hospital as there was no operation theatre at the Area Hospital.
In addition to that, there was not even an incubator for treating infants. The hospital building was in a dilapidated condition and there was no separate washroom facility for women and the bathrooms were very unhygienic with vegetation sprouting inside them, Veerabhadram said.
He demanded the State government immediately to allot funds to improve health services at Wyra Area Hospital and appoint doctors and staff in required numbers.
