Hyderabad: With temperatures rising steadily across Telangana, electricity demand in the State is also climbing sharply. On March 3, the total power demand touched 18,139 MW, while the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) recorded a peak demand of 11,129 MW within its jurisdiction on Friday.
On the same day last year, the peak demand stood at 10,310 MW, indicating a significant rise this season. Electricity consumption has also increased markedly within the Greater Hyderabad region, where a demand of 4,421 MW was recorded on March 3.
Officials attributed the surge to a combination of factors, including higher agricultural consumption during the ongoing rabi crop season and increased use of electricity in households, commercial establishments and industries due to rising temperatures.
According to officials, the all-time peak demand recorded last year in the TGSPDCL jurisdiction was already surpassed within the first week of March this year.
Districts with high agricultural consumption reported a notable increase in demand. The combined Nalgonda district registered the highest demand at 2,459 MW, followed by Mahabubnagar at 2,326 MW and the combined Medak district at 2,181 MW.
TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V Patil said necessary measures were being taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply despite the surge in demand. Field-level officials and staff have been directed to continuously monitor the load on 33 kV and 11 kV feeders as well as power transformers at substations to manage the increasing load effectively, he added.
