Hyderabad: PlayStation Network services were restored Saturday after a messy Friday, as gamers entered a state of protest after nearly 24 hours of outage. The trouble began on Friday around 7:00 PM ET and locked PS4 and PS5 users out of multiplayer gaming, digital game purchases, and account management services.
Gamers complained the shutdown affected popular titles such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto. Many also took to social media to express outrage; some deemed the timing ‘criminal’ and hitting on the Friday evening as others made light-hearted remarks connecting with their loved ones.
This made the status page of PlayStation report that its main services, such as the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Video, were down. PSN-connected devices such as PlayStation VR and PlayStation Vita, among others, were down.
Although Sony did not say why the outage took place, rumours abound: Some suspect it was due to server overload, while others speculate that it could have been a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. There was no word from Sony about how long this would last.
While it was quite a hassle, services began to come back online, allowing gamers to continue their activities. Sony had not explained what had caused the downtime.
