PM Modi blames Congress for destruction of biodiversity in Kancha Gachibowli
Says while the Centre is working on generating gas from waste, the Congress government in Telangana is destroying forests
HYDERABAD: The controversy surrounding the destruction of rich biodiversity in Kancha Gachibowli has drawn Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attention as well, with him alleging that the Congress government’s action reflected complete disregard for nature. The Congress government was operating bulldozers in jungles, which was damaging the environment and posing a threat to wild animals. This was the Congress way of functioning, he said while addressing a public meeting at Hisar city in Haryana.
Pointing out that while the Centre was working on generating gas from waste, the Congress government in Telangana was destroying forests.
“The Congress government in Telangana has forgotten the promises made to the people,” Modi said.
The row over tree felling and destructing the rich biodiversity in the 400 acres at Kancha Gachibowli hit national headlines after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the incident. University of Hyderabad students and people from different sections protested against the Congress government’s plans to establish an IT Park in the lands. Many students were caned and a few were arrested for staging protests.
On April 3, the Supreme Court directed the State government to stop all activities in the contentious land until further orders. After an interim report submitted by the High Court Registrar, which said a large number of trees were felled, the apex court also sought an explanation from the Chief Secretary over what was the compelling urgency in clearing the trees and disturbing the wild animals. The next hearing is scheduled on April 16.
