Hyderabad: For the first time in recent years, government hospitals in Telangana are showing signs of lagging behind private hospitals in terms of conducting pregnancies, reflecting a shift in the delivery landscape.
In 2024-25, government hospitals in the state handled 47.20 percent of deliveries, while the remaining 52.80 percent were handled by private/other healthcare facilities, according to the publicly available (mchkits.telangana.gov.in) data.
This shift, where the private healthcare facilities handled the majority of deliveries in 2024-25, marks a significant change in the trend that had government hospitals on the top, universally believed to be due to initiatives like KCR Kits. The State government’s share of deliveries in 2024-25 registered a 3.61 percent point decline from 50.81 percent in 2023-24.
Public health officials in Hyderabad emphasized that while the latest drop in terms of pregnancies might not seem individually significant, it should, however, act as a sign for policy makers to course correct and lay more stress on ensuring poor pregnant women and their families avail free government facilities.
While government hospitals’ share dipped from 53.97 percent in 2022-23 to 50.81 percent in 2023-24, and further to 47.20 percent in 2024-25, the ongoing 2025-26 data (till now), however, shows a recovery, with government hospitals handling 49.85 percent of deliveries compared to private/others at 50.15 percent.
From 2020-21 to 2022-2023, there was a decreasing trend in the percentage of deliveries in private hospitals, from 48.91 percent down to 46.03 percent. During this same period, the government hospitals gained share, possibly due to initiatives like KCR Kits etc.
From 2022-23, however, there has been a noticeable increase in the share of pregnancies conducted by private healthcare facilities. This started from 46.03 percent (2022-23) and increased to 49.19 percent in 2023-24 and continued to rise significantly into 2024-25, where private hospitals accounted for more than half (52.80 percent) of the total deliveries.
However, for the ongoing partial year 2025-26 (till now), the percentage of deliveries in private hospitals has slightly decreased to 50.15 percent from the previous year of 52.80 percent.
