Nirmal: Tension prevailed when residents of four villages staged a sit-in on the National Highway 61 at Dilawarpur mandal centres protesting against establishment of an ethanol factory, by threatening to kill themselves and carrying bottles of pesticides if the government did not take steps to shift the factory to some other place on Wednesday.
The villagers belonging to Dilawarpur mandal headquarters, Gundampalli, Mukundapur, Samundarpalli villages staged the protest on the busy Nirmal-Bhiwandi stretch of the Maharashtra national highway since morning.
They raised slogans against the government and establishment of the factory. They said their agricultural farms would be polluted and their lives would be thrown out of gear with the advent of the factory.
As a result, traffic passing on the stretch came to a standstill for several hours. Passengers travelling in TGRTC buses and cars, students of schools faced inconvenience due the protest. They were forced to wait in the vehicles from morning to afternoon.
