Visakhapatnam: AITUC general secretary Amarjit Kaur has alleged that the Centre was selling away public sector undertakings only to benefit private business houses.

Addressing a media conference here on Saturday, the trade union leader who was here to participate in a rally against privatisation of Vizag steel plant, noted that while none of the public sector steel plants were privatised, it was a pity that the Vizag steel plant, which was achieved after lot of sacrifices, was targeted. The government had no business to sell the steel plant which is worth Rs.62,000 crore and already paid several thousands of crore towards taxes and in the form of dividend to the Centre, for a mere Rs.3200 crore, she pointed out.

The move to privatise would seriously affect the working class both employees and contract workers, she said, adding that alloting captive mines to the plant would enable it make profits.

AITUC national leader Tapan Sen felt only a public struggle would stop privatisation and warned that people would not keep quiet if national wealth is sold away. HMS leader Ajit urged the people to reject privatisation on the same lines as the lignite company in Tamil Nadu.

BMS leader D.K. Pandey said privatisation of steel plant meant sacrificing the public interest. CITU state president Ch. Narasinga Rao, and others spoke.
