Ramappa temple nominated for UNESCO heritage tag

Hyderabad: The State government’s efforts to get the UNESCO heritage recognition for Ramappa temple have paid off with the Central government nominating the temple for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Recently, a team led by Ministers Errabelli Dayakar Rao, V Srinivas Goud, Satyavathi Rathod, MLC Pochampally Srinivas Reddy and other officials, visited New Delhi and made a strong pitch to the Centre to nominate Ramappa for the UNESCO tag.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Tourism Prahlad Singh and met several other officials in this regard.
According to the inscriptions in the temple, it was built in 1213 CE by a general of the Kakatiya empire, Recherla Rudra, during the reign of Kakatiya King Ganapati Deva. The temple is known for its unique features like ‘floating bricks’, sandbox foundations and exquisite carvings.
UNESCO officials had inspected the historic temple in 2019. Located about 70 km away from Warangal, Ramappa is the only temple in the country known by the name of its sculptor rather than the presiding deity.
