Karimnagar: At least six students of the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Residential School (Gurukulam) in Saidapur mandal were bitten by rats while asleep in their hostel on Wednesday night. The incident, however, came to light only on Friday.
According to school authorities, rats entered the hostel rooms at night and bit the students in their sleep. Five Class VIII students Yashwanth, Saicharan, Kaushik, Akshith, and Srujan and one Class IX student, Rakshith, were injured.
The students reported the matter to the principal on Thursday, following which they were taken to the local government hospital, where they were treated and administered vaccinations.
Rats reportedly entered the premises due to unhygienic conditions around the hostel building.
Principal Rani stated that none of the students suffered serious health complications. She added that rats were likely entering the hostel due to surrounding rice mills, overgrown bushes, and accumulated garbage.
On learning of the incident, Deputy DMHO Dr Sravan visited the hostel on Friday with his medical team, conducted a camp, and distributed medicines to all students.
Although the Gurukulam was sanctioned for Saidapur mandal, it is currently operating out of a private building on the outskirts of Bornapalli in Huzurabad town due to the lack of proper infrastructure in Saidapur.
