Ravi Kumar and Shringhari Roy shine on opening day of Youth Open Regatta
The 6th YAI Secunderabad Club GMR Sports Youth Open Regatta 2026 began at Hussain Sagar Lake under favourable sailing conditions. India's leading Optimist sailors, B Ravi Kumar and Shringhari Roy, topped their respective fleets after six races on the opening day
Hyderabad: Racing at the 6th YAI Secunderabad Club GMR Sports Youth Open Regatta 2026 got under way at Hussain Sagar Lake on Tuesday, with light rain greeting the fleet as the first boats launched, taken by the sailing community as a blessing from the rain gods, before the weather cleared into near-ideal racing conditions.
A breeze of 10 to 17 knots held through the day, enough to reward the sailors who read the shifts well and enough to test boat handling across every class. Three races were completed in the forenoon session and three more in the afternoon, putting all seven events through three races apiece by the close of play.
The Optimist fleets kept the race officials busy, with the youngest sailors repeatedly pushing the start line and forcing recalls before clean starts were achieved.
Race organisers Ajay Patel and Arjun Pradipak, Commodore of the Secunderabad Sailing Club, said they were pleased with the opening day, with racing completed as scheduled in both sessions and conditions that gave every class a fair test.
India’s number one-ranked Optimist sailors dominated their fleets. Shringhari Roy of the host Secunderabad Sailing Club and B Ravi Kumar of TSA led their respective fleets. The regatta is a YAI National Ranking Event and National Junior Ranking Event, organised by the Secunderabad Sailing Club in association with the EME Sailing Association, under the sanction of the Yachting Association of India. GMR Sports is the title sponsor.
