Neir Reincarnation, a Player versus Player (PvP) focused battle arena game has always been a cult favourite with complex stories. Games set around human beings transformed into killer machines with deadly body implants, it is a series of games with very complex stories and nuanced combat mechanisms. So, when one of the Nier games was coming to mobile it was essential to know how the shift would be made. How would the complex stories be told, and most importantly would the murderous beauty translate?
Reincarnation achieves that and a lot more as it does not just introduces first time players to the universe but also tells the backstories. You begin the game as an unnamed automaton and as she picks up key attributes like hope and will, she understands herself and the weapons she wields. This is a game about reclaiming memories and redefining oneself on their terms and Reincarnation does it perfectly. Each weapon you acquire has a story of its own and each of those stories are wonderfully told and linked.
Reincarnation is in every way a full-fledged Nier game. In terms of gameplay, the pace at which it all unfurls is a bit too slow and the combat is a mere tapping of buttons. The game’s sound effects are fantastic and the narration is simply superb, with the right pair of headphones Reincarnation can leave you immersed to a great extent. There are a few flaws though, as a game despite its beauty.
Reincarnation does little to push the envelope of players’ engagement. There are everyday login bonuses and lots of gifts but their purpose seems a bit detached. I used the gifts to level up and suddenly I was too strong. These are things that need to be fixed.
As things stand, Reincarnation can be a lot of fun if you like stories and don’t mind the simplistic combat. It does consume a lot of battery though so make sure to have a power bank handy.
A solid mobile game that is worth a try.
