Warangal: An RTC driver, Shanker Goud, who attempted suicide by setting himself on fire has been shifted to Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad for better treatment as his condition turned critical.
According to sources, the driver, aged over 50 years, sustained nearly 81 percent burns in his suicide bid during a protest at Narsampet RTC depot on Thursday afternoon.
After being treated locally, he was rushed to MGM Hospital and then was shifted to Hyderabad later in the evening in a special ambulance amid tight police security.
BRS leaders Peddi Sudharshan Reddy, Dasyam Vinay Bhasker, Nannapuneni Narender and others visited MGM Hospital to check on the driver’s condition. They demanded that the Congress government respond immediately and address the workers’ demands to end the strike.
Meanwhile, in Mahabubabad district, police detained several workers who arrived at the local depot to participate in the second day’s strike.
Leaders of employee unions have expressed outrage at the police action and the filing of cases against them, demanding their immediate release.
In an incident in Jangaon district, an RTC worker, who had joined a protest, moved everyone present when he fell at the feet of police officers and pleaded with them not to obstruct the workers’ strike.
At the Jangaon RTC depot, under the supervision of CI Satyanarayana Reddy, buses were dispatched to various destinations under heavy security, with a police constable assigned to each bus. The workers have made it clear that they would not call off the strike until their demands were met.
