Hyderabad: Around 140 runners took part took part in a marathon organised by the Society to Save Rocks, a NGO that aims to preserve and protect the ancient granite formations of the Deccan Plateau, here on Sunday.
While some covered the 21 km i.e. from Fakhruddin Gutta (Khajaguda) – Ghar E Mubarak in Langar Houz Road (near Taramati Baradari Resort) and came back to the starting point, others covered 6 km around the Fakhruddin Gutta.
Participants said that the granite formations should be conserved. “Society to Save Rocks, the lone NGO in India that works exclusively for rock conservation celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. With the understanding that not all rocks can be preserved, integration of rocks into living spaces and conservation is being actively promoted,” said Sangeeta Varma, curator of Rocks Matter, a virtual rock photo exhibition.
Meanwhile, Aparajita Sinha, one of the founding members of the society said that rocks should also be conserved along with forest as both are rich in resources and play their roles in the ecology of the planet. She also mentioned that the Deccan rocks are 2,500 million years old, one of the oldest in the world.
